Trucking Efficiently

With the rising costs of gas these days I wonder how the trucking industry stays in business. I know that there has to be ways that they can cut down on gas. I often wonder what kind of truck dispatch software that would be available to help them track all of this.

Do they have trucks stay in the same area? How do they keep there gas prices to a minimum? I wonder if the they have the ability to control the routes of the drivers to make them more efficient.

I am sure with technology that is out there today that they have this ability, but how often and well is is used is the big question.
