Gongs in Orchestral Accompaniment

05 July 2008

Opera gongs range in size from 7" to 12", with the larger of the pair about one or two inches larger than the smaller. Richard Wagner was one of the first composers to use gongs in his works. Within a few decades the gong became an important member of the percussion section of a modern symphony orchestra. Fine examples of its use are demonstrated in the symphonies of Gustav Mahler and Dmitri Shostakovich. In some operas, especially the Oriental counterparts of modern orchestras, gongs are used in as musical score. The larger gong is used to announce the entrance of major players, mostly men. The smaller gong however is used to announce the entry of lesser players, who are mostly women. While the larger gongs are used to identify points of drama and consequence their smaller siblings are struck to identify points of humor.

Maine Maritime Museum

01 July 2008

The seafarers that once sailed the high seas in tall ships fascinate people of all ages. They traded goods and braved all the dangers that the unpredictable sea could throw at them. It is no wonder then that one of the most popular attractions around the city of Bath, Maine is the Maine Maritime Museum. The museum displays the rich maritime history of the people of Maine, from lobster fishermen to traders and sailors and shipbuilders of all varieties. It is located on twenty-five acres and encompasses the seafront, as well as galleries, exhibits, and some hands on activities. Visitors can tour a real Victorian ear house as well as a shipyard that contains five original buildings from the 1800s. You can even learn how the ships of the day were built. The town of Bath offers as much opportunity for fun as does the museum. You can visit art galleries and shops, search for antiques to bring home. There are plenty of great restaurants in the town as well, and you can even stay in a historic bed and breakfast if you would like. You won’t be at a loss of things to do while in Bath. It is a fun and relaxing place to be.

A Knitting Family Heirloom

06 June 2008

A family heirloom I began knitting when I was about 13 years old. At thirteen there is so much to do, yet I always found myself bored and became a pain in my mother’s neck. She was knitting the one day a scarf for the winter, and I became amazed at how these two plastic knitting needles could transform a roll of wool into so many different things like a blanket, a pull-over, a scarf or a tea-cozy. I was so intrigued that I asked my mother to show me how to knit. She did and then later she told me the story of my grandmother’s elephant tusk ivory knitting needle. There was only one left of the pair, we never knew why. This needle was so rare since they stopped using ivory to save the animals from becoming endangered. I found this ivory knitting needle many years later and it became a family heirloom passing it down to my children. I never did tell my wife all about my knitting.

Macintosh audio recording provides a stable platform

27 May 2008

The new Mac computers are definitely something that have been getting a lot of attention. I have friends who work in the music industry and they have been very impressed by the stability of Mac machines. I have always used a PC due to the versatility of the software. With the evolution of emulators, this is no longer a strict requirement. I have been considering getting a new Mac for my home studio. I like the idea of having a more stable machine. Macintosh audio recording would certainly seem to fit the bill based on the feedback that I have been getting.

Fairy tattoos for males too.

26 May 2008

I have heard this from many people that fairy tattoos are for females only and that anyone who gets fairy tattoos is not much of a male. Maybe he is even looked at as gay. I dont know where do all these beliefs come from , but I really dont like the idea of restricting fairy tattoos to a certain gender only.

How can fairy tattoos be for females only. I have seen lots of males with these tattoos and all of them have their reasons for that. For some, it reminds them of their girl friends while for others it is just for fashion, while still for others they just love the sensuos nature of fairy tattoos.

The point is that males are as much entitled to fairy tattoos as females are and no one take it away from them, no matter what.

A Little Something Different

28 April 2008

I have always liked to have a little something different in the way I dress. I like to be different in small ways. I have to wear business suits to work, so I add a little style by using pocket watches instead of wearing a watch. It can be a great conversation piece too. I also sometimes use a bright colored pocket handkerchief. Depending on what I’ll be doing during the day, I might wear a tie that is a little bit funky, but if I have any major meetings I have to stick with ties that aren’t too outrageous.

Celtic Tattoo meanings

25 April 2008

If you are of celtic decent the beautiful knotwork of the celtic tradition may have special meaning for you.

If you are Irish, Scottish, or Welsh, the celtic cross tattoo meanings stand for heritage and history.

The cross is well documented in the Book of Kells and other manuscript illustrations.

The symbolism of Celtic tattoo meanings, between the circle and cross represent the eternal unity of life and the four directions or elements of earth, air, fire and water.

Despite its long history or maybe because of it, the cross has been well accepted into other cultures and religions and adopted to other meanings as well.
