Not Just Sit and Stay With Dog Training
13 December 2008
There’s more to dog training than “sit” and “stay.” Training regimens can be designed to reach certain goals based on the dog’s age, behavior or breed.
Puppy training keeps the goals simple. House training and simple commands such as sit, stay and heel are the focus for the younger dogs. Obedience training goes a step further to teach dogs to obey specific commands. Behavior training is for dogs that need some sort of behavior modification, such as an aggressive dog that needs to be taught to be gentle. These types of training are often considered essential to having a happy dog.
Dog agility training aims to teach dogs to perform physical actions such as climbing and jumping over objects on an obstacle course. Owners of dogs who compete find this type of training useful. The last and most unique form of training is hunting dog training. Dogs are taught to develop their natural physical attributes into skills by tracking, chasing and retrieving game. All dogs can benefit from either type of training. Choose the type that will benefit you and your dog the most.
