Intacs Continued
Intacs are available in the United States in five different thicknesses, 0.25, 0.275, 0.30, 0.325 and 0.35 mm. In Europe and some other countries outside the United States Intacs are also available in thicknesses of 0.40 and 0.45 mm. Because of limited range of correction and possibility for induced astigmatism, Intacs have declined in popularity for the initially intended correction of myopia, but their specific design makes them an integral and common surgical treatment for treatment of keratoconus and keratoectasia.
The goal of Intacs is to improve vision by reducing the irregular corneal shape caused by the cone. Depending on the level of keratoconus prior to Intacs placement, patients can expect improvement ranging from 1) enhanced uncorrected vision without any lenses, 2) better vision in contacts and glasses, 3) moving out of one type of contact lens into another (eg, being able to switch from rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses to soft contact lenses), or 4) improved fitting and vision with current RGP or SynergEyes® lenses being worn.
