Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve, Idaho
One of the most unusual volcanic phenomena in the United States is located in Idaho. Thousands of years ago, Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve was the site of fissure eruptions along the earth’s surface. The resulting flow of black lava and the formation of cinder cones transformed the landscape into the bizarre natural wonder you can visit today. There are many hiking trails to explore both above ground and below ground in lava tube caves at Craters of the Moon, and there is a campground on site, as well. Wilderness camping is also available by access pass. Because the area presents such an unusual landscape with geological features that are foreign to most visitors, it is a good idea to start your tour of Craters of the Moon at the Vistior’s Center. You can learn about the unique features and attractions you will be viewing, plus obtain maps and learn about important safety issues to consider during your tour of the Preserve.
