Out of Work with a Shattered Ankle
I’m a plumber. I’m up and down stairs with equipment. I’m under sinks. I sometimes have to squeeze in and out of tight areas.
Unfortunately, I’ve been out of work for five months because I shattered an ankle when I fell off a ladder. I was cleaning my gutters and slipped.
I’ve been out of work for five months but I only missed about a month and a half’s pay. How? I bought an AZ disability policy for the self-employed.
After I was disabled for a full month I was able to put in a claim. I’ve been getting disability benefit checks every month since then.
We had enough savings to last until we got the first check. The checks are about seventy percent of my former gross paycheck. However since the money is tax free, it comes pretty close to my old net pay.
When I bought the policy I thought that I was doing my brother-in-law a favor. I really didn’t worry about getting sick or hurt. He was struggling as an insurance agent and I wanted to help him out.
I’m glad that I liked my wife’s brother enough to do myself a favor. Owning this policy really makes a huge difference in how we live today.
It is easy to think that bad things always happed to the other guy and use that as an excuse not to buy insurance. This time I was the other guy.
I’ll be back to work soon. I’ve had several surgeries. I just had my last one. I’ll be pretty much back to my old self in a few more months.
I want to go back to work. However, I’m glad that I don’t have to choose between taking my doctor’s advice and paying my rent. If I didn’t’ have money coming in, I might try to go back to work before my body was ready.
