The 529 California type plans are not just for California.

First of all, the highly sought after 529 California plans in the state of California are all open to both residents and nonresidents of the state. What this means is that it doesn’t matter where you live in the United States, you can still participate in California’s 529 plans.  You can even be a resident of some foreign countries and still be eligible to take part.

And, a lot of individual states within the United States now have their own version of the 529 plans (529 refers to a section within the IRC; the Internal Revenue Code, which is Federal law). Probably the easiest way to find out what your specific state has to offer in regards to a 529 plan, is do an internet search.  There are several college plan networks that offer information on your states’ plan.  Great information is only a few clicks away.
